About time we started testing all these Philistine remains, the last time I went to Ashkelon I was told they were testing Canaanite and Philistine remains, but I heard nothing since then (that was in 2012). And the ultra-orthodox meddling is just infuriating, yet another reason to dismantle the rabbinate.

Yep yep, as a person currently living in Israel, I agree wholly. Not long ago those fanatics attempted to halt the building of homes in the Jerusalem area because it was on and near to an ancient burial site which may and probably did contain ancient Jewish remains.

There's a joke which goes like this: If Moses and Solomon came back to Israel, their children would not qualify as Jews thanks to the rabbinate and its silly laws... I'll add that Ruth's conversion would also be invalidated as soon as she set foot in Ben Gurion airport

I always assumed the Philistines were related to either Minoans from Crete, Sicanians from Sicily, or both.

Discovery of Philistine Cemetery May Solve Biblical Mystery

An unprecedented find in southern Israel may finally reveal the origins of one of the Hebrew Bible's greatest villains.

An unrivaled discovery on the southern coast of Israel may enable archaeologists to finally unravel the origins of one of the most notorious and enigmatic peoples of the Hebrew Bible: the Philistines.

The discovery of a large cemetery outside the walls of ancient Ashkelon, a major city of the Philistines between the 12th and 7th centuries B.C., is the first of its kind in the history of archaeological investigation in the region. (Read more about ancient Ashkelon.)

While more than a century of scholarship has identified the five major cities of the Philistines and artifacts distinctive to their culture, only a handful of burials have been tentatively identified.

An international team of researchers is currently conducting DNA research, isotopic analysis, and biological distance studies to determine the origin of the population of the Ashkelon cemetery, as well as their relation to other groups in the area. Since the majority of the burials date to at least two centuries after the initial arrival of the Philistines—which may have involved generations of cultural exchange and intermarriage—direct insights into their original origins may be complicated. The archaeologists have not announced any conclusions, saying they are taking advantage of recent advances in DNA testing to get the most accurate results.

They're more likely to have been related to Mycenaeans and Lydians, it'll be interesting to see how similar they are to Mycenaean remains.

My guess is they will not be close to modern day Greeks though, unless they too have NE European affinity.

Depends, if the Mycenaeans retained large chunks of steppe ancestry, then they might've been close to modern-day Greeks... As far as the Philistines go, it's doubtful since most of the samples are likely to have absorbed local Canaanite admixture.

I know there were settlements in the Levant from people who came from Crete and Sicily (Minoans and Shekelesh) but I didn't know about Mycenaeans. Maybe the former were not Philistines.
