    Indians with pashtun ancestry?

One thing I having noticed on the internet is that a lot of indians saying they having pashtun ancestry. A lot of Bolly wood actors says this too. It is very interesting. Did a lot of pashtuns go into certain parts of India?

Of course. There were Afghan kingdoms/empires that extended well into India. Until the British conquered India completely, there were still many Pashtun tribes living in what is modern day Punjab. Before the Sikhs conquered that area, which was only around the early-mid 1800s, there were even more. That's very recent.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. That explains the pockets of Punjabis that look afghan too.

Pretty sure that's not the reason. A person from south asia can have 0 pashtun heritage and yet can look like one sometimes, probably because of Similar genetic base, I.e. ENF, ANE, WHG and steppe etc, with south Asians having higher ASE/ASI than Afghans.

And the only people that claim Afghan heritage are some south asian muslim communities. Cousin of mine is Normally assumed to be Persian or Afghan, but we don't have/claim any Afghan mixture.

Interesting. Is due to political reasons they claiming afgan blood or because of actual heritage?

Lots of Hindus especially lower castes converted to islam during multiple invasions, to feel closer to their new identies, majority of then started claiming west asian ancestries. But there are some legit decendants as well.

Yeah, genotype does not equal phenotype. Though it's possible some phenotypes are from Afghanistan. My best friend who is a Muslim with ancestry from Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai has an Afghan great-grandparent (and has Afghans in their DNA Relatives on 23andMe all in the same few segments) and even looks Afghan in terms of skin color (pretty much white) but his autosomal results are basically exactly what you'd expect for UP/Mumbai with like 2-3% extra West Asian being all that's left of their Afghan ancestor.

Well afghans don't seem to be genetically that far from those very West Asian shifted north indians such as sikhs, kashmiris, punjabs, etc. So I am not surprising they overlapping a little.

I have yet to encounter an Indian who claims Pashtun ancestry save for the one who was an ethnic Pathan from Maler Kotla , which he said is an enclave in Indian Punjab which has many ethnic Pashtuns/Pathans , the other Muslims in the area Muslim Jats or recent migrants from Uttar Pradesh based off what he said Duffy can confirm as he knows that area better. You will encounter more Pakistanis saying this well because you do have 30-35 million ethnic Pashtuns/Pathan living in the country. I would say many do claim Pashtun ancestry but at the same time they are many who are. Where it gets complicated is many of the Pashtuns in the Nangarhar/Laghman/Kunar region were "Pashtunized" Indic/Indo Aryan peoples to begin with, presence of relic Indo Aryan languages like Nangalami and Pashaiye are evidence of that. The Indo Aryan cultural tool kit/ Gandhara culture emanated from that area as well centered on 3 cities , Jalalabad (Adinapur) , Peshawar and Taxila( near Rawalpindi)
