There might be times someone genetically close has indeed tested, but when you look at your old report it will contain no clue of that. "You don't know what you don't know". One could be left in the dark. I can't help wondering if any mechanism has been set up to prevent that.
The sample is stored so that it can be upgraded from 2x to 4x to 10x by paying the cost difference in price.

Beyond 10x, the sample can be upgraded for $60/1x, up to 50x coverage.

Essentially, this gives the customer the option to buy at an entry level price and then upgrade to more data at a later time.

So does that mean I can upgrade my two 30x sequences to 50x for about 1200$ a piece? I'd be potentially interested in this.

Note that the number of bases with at least 1x coverage is similar across 30x, 10x and Y Elite 1.0:

    30x whole genome: 22,761,293
    10x whole genome: 22,025,697

    Y Elite 1.0: 22,772,412

However, the number of private SNPs called with high confidence will be lower in the 10x data, but careful analysis should reveal some significant findings.

This diagram illustrates our projections of Y chromosome coverage based on WGS coverage:

A 20x WGS would probably be very close to Y Elite 1.0 or 2.0 in call confidence.

Is upgrading to 50x the limit? Would it be possible to upgrade further toward 100x down the line?

I believe upgrades to 100x are possible now, if that's what you are interested in.

I noticed this morning that my Y Elite batch number changed from 9007 to 8004. Reading through this thread, I gather that the current state of Y Elite batches is the following:

    Code:
    Batch Notes
9004 Roche technology, hg37 reference, sequencing completed and results delivered ~mid-August 2015
9005 Roche technology, hg37 reference, sequencing completed and results delivered ~mid-November 2016
9006 Roche technology, hg37 reference, sequencing underway
9007 Roche technology, hg37 reference, sequencing underway
8001 Agilent technology, hg38 reference, sequencing underway, results expected ~mid-February 2016
8002 Agilent technology, hg38 reference, sequencing underway
8003 Agilent technology, hg38 reference, sequencing underway
8004 Agilent technology, hg38 reference, sequencing underway
Is the above correct? A previous post also estimated that the first hg38 results would come in around mid-February 2016, so I'm guessing that applies to the first Agilent batch (8001?).
