My Parents nationality is Ugandan - Father is a Central-Sudanic speaker, Mother comes from a much smaller Eastern-Sudanic ethnicity rooted in the horn (hence the L3x2b mtDNA). It looks like they've completed assimilated among the Central-Sudanic speakers -- her results are almost identical to my father's -- minus the Western Semitic and S-HG.

The Bulala from Chad also happen to be Nilo-Saharan speakers of the same branch; Central-Sudanic. This branch stretches in a belt from Lake Chad to Lake Albert in Uganda, these results imply that our genetic pool has more or less remained intact over the centuries. I'm still not sure on the dating of migration from West to East -- I wonder if it was due to the drying of Lake Chad and the surrounding Sahara.

I found the Congo clusters, W_Benue\E_Benue\Ubangian, to be very helpful in more specifically pinpointing similarities within the Oracle ethnic groups. Shout-out to the creator of puntDNAL!

Pardon my ignorance - Could anyone bring me up to speed on where\when horners inherited their Nilo-Saharan ancestry - Lank & drobbah, would you say your amount of Nilo-Saharan ancestry is consistent with other horners?

Is it generally believed to have been from the inter-mixture of Nilotic and Cushitic peoples in the Nile valley following the dry phase of the Sahara and development of Nile states ? That might explain some notable frequencies of the predominantly Nilotic A paternal haplogroup within the horn:

Nilo-Saharan ancestry in this calculator is the best available proxy for the African ancestry of Cushitic people. It should be understood as "Nilo-Saharan-related" ancestry. It is unknown whether some of the African ancestors of Proto-Cushites spoke Nilo-Saharan, or if it was some other group that was related to Nilo-Saharans (some of the uniparental markers are old enough to support the latter scenario).

Once Cushites/"Horners" form their own ADMIXTURE component, nearly all of the "Nilo-Saharan" tends to disappear. The lack of recent Nilo-Saharan is supported by the observation that Y-DNA B is usually lacking in the Horn, but is fairly common in Nilo-Saharan speakers (~20% in the South Sudanese). Proto-Cushites are commonly believed to have migrated through North Sudan, where A-M13 but not B has been reported in ancient DNA.


@Deftextra: That's a fairly high Omotic score. Dunno if it may be skewed by your Asian ancestry, though.

In regards to the African only model, do you you foresee additional clusters being added in the near future?
Similarly to the NK breakdown of bantu speakers (E Benue/W Benue/Ubangian), it would be interesting to see additional ancestral clusters for Nilo-Saharan and Afro-Asiatic speakers. Would the inclusion of Chadic and Central-Sudanic throw the calculator out of whack? I found mention of these clusters in a publication done by Tishkoff and others: "The Genetic Structure and History of Africans and African Americans" (2009).

My knowledge regarding these calculators is humble at best but Western Semitic seems too broad a cluster for Afro-Asiatic speakers; their breakdown would be most interesting.

Of course with my ancestry being primarily from the Central-Sudanic branch of NS speakers, I'm extremely curious to see associations with other oracle populations in the Sahel and surrounding regions.

Hmm I would like to see how Copts, Bedouins, Saudi Arabians and Yemenite Jews will score in Puntdnal K8 even though they are mostly non-African genetically. From what I know Copts have substantial African ancestry from 7~9-15% with average around 10~12% with their African is an East African Nilo-Saharan/Nilotic type that peaks in Dinkas, Shilluks, Nuers, Muris, Suris, etc. Unlike other MENAs, they lack the West-Central African component.

The Copt's African ancestry is similar to those of Arabian populations like Bedouins, Saudi Arabians, Yemenite Jews and some Yemeni Muslims who can range from around 2~3 to 15% African (some Arabians is said to have around 15% East African Nilote)with most average around 6~10% SSA (based on the spreadsheets in K8) also of only East African Nilotic/Nilo-Saharan component.
