    Pashto Songs

Nice Pakhtun tapay, Ya Qurban, by Raees Bacha. Amjad Malang, a great rabab player in the background. The young woman on the side I believe is singer Ghazala Javed, who was recently killed

They are from S of the Durrand. Here are two instrumental versions of one of my favorite melodies, Da zemong zeba watan (our beautiful country). Ustad Ghulam Hussein is an excellent rabab player.

Can't understand anything in the first song. I thought since Pashtu is similar to Hindi/Urdu, I'd be able to understand it in parts. The music sounds like a blend of Middle Eastern and Indian.

Well Urdu was influenced by Iranic languages, most notably Persian. So there are lots of common words between them.

Ye, I understood more in that video.

Well, no doubt Pashto isn't close enough to actually be even semi intelligible with Hindi/Urdu, there are obviously some similarities as Iranic and Indo-Aryan languages are both part of the Indo-Iranian subbranch of Indo-European languages. I'm not a linguist but Pashto definitely sounds much more familiar to Indo-Aryan languages than any of the other Iranic languages (Farsi, Balochi, Kurdish, Ossetian, Luri, etc.). That may just be an artifact of geography and cultural exchange. Not 100% sure.

"Extensive borrowing has caused Pashto to share many features of the Indo-Aryan group of the Indo-European languages as well."
