Thanks Pylsteen! I guess you are pretty right!

I'am in a hurry, so a first reaction.

There are indeed different layers, North vs South is the most fundamental layer and most differentiated. So above an beneath the Rhine. IMO the line were there was a La Tene/Hallstatt influence (South) and where not (North).

Then there is a Frankish cluster (very obvious the Salic Franks around Kampen, Genemuiden etc) from Overijssel and than southward, that's a kind of central Dutch cline.

And there is a Saxon cluster that's the Northeastern cline (Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Twente).

This map from Olaide e.a. (2013) seems to support that:

Long ago I was on a military exchange program with the Bundeswehr in Hamburg (at the university there) and Ostfriesland (the German part of Frisia) was often the butt of jokes, they were held to be backwards, etc. Sort of like West Virginia jokes here in the US, I suppose.
And the Welsh in the UK, although I know of other parts of the UK which are also "targets" like the Forest of Dean which they call "The Forest" and some other Gloucestershire people regard as a strange place. John
