August 2017 solar eclipse -- line of totality crosses continental USA

    From Newsweek:
On August 21, people across the U.S. will see day turn to night as a total solar eclipse passes over North America. The last time the path of a total solar eclipse passed across the country from coast to coast was 1918, so this year’s event is, as expected, generating considerable excitement.

I'm envious. Hope you get a chance to see it. I was on top of Mauna Loa, Hawaii for the 1991 eclipse. No animals around to see their reaction but a fantastic view stretching from horizon to horizon. That was actually my favorite part, watching the shadow zoom across the earth towards me.

Genealogical wise looks like all my family missed the 1918 one. They would have been directly under the totality zone for that one a generation before in Arkansas and Mississippi but by 1918 they had moved to west Texas.

I'm arranging my work schedule so that I'm at the clients site that day. They should have about 94 seconds of totality outside of the office window.

I saw one when I was a kid in elementary school in Chula Vista, California, not far from the Mexican border. That was not in 1918, btw. Anyway, it was awesome. I hope I get to see this one.

I'm not in the gray/shaded band, so I'll miss it.

I've been told you're not supposed to look at a solar eclipse because it can damage your eyesight.

I am apparently in one of the best places in the US to see it (Charleston, SC). Looking forward to it.

There are glasses especially made so people can view the eclipse. They seem to see for about $1. I suspect the money is made on Shipping and Handling.
    eg.

In zooming in I see the manufacture has customized the glasses with info on the eclipse date, etc.
